interactivity....

I really want my final piece to have an interactive element, i want people to be able to create their own visuals in some way. I have done a lot of research about how to connect lights to speakers to get them to react in time with the music. For all my searching, i have only been able to see how to make one light react independently, when what i really want is for each note to have an individual light reaction. This is something i am finding very hard to work out, it seems this a very complicated thing to achieve, i have downloaded endless software that tells me it does this exact thing, when it doesn't.

I think this is the closest thing i am going to get to what i want (bonus that it comes ready made!) i intend to order 8-10 boards and i want to make each board a different colour LED so people canlisten to the music and figure out which of the colours they feel represent what they are listening to. this is going to make my piece more interesting and people can really get involved in it.
