after effects....

I've been having a play with a few techniques on after effects to use in the animation of the songs bass line. I'm liking how this looks, im aware its not in time but just to give an idea......

I just cannot get enough of his motion graphics.....i keep watching them over....really love his style

4 bars

depicting 5 notes......

The scale and brightness of the colours/shapes depicts the strength of that note in this first 4 bars

some development

I have been transferring my sketches to illustrator and blending and mixing them together to try and come out with some interesting shapes that might represent the musical notes.

I like how its going so far, and i think its effective as a square of 8 bars

progress

Some snippets from my sketchbook.

Some research i have been doing and 'mind mapping'. I've been looking at the colouring in Romanticist paintings and have found that my initial sketches look quite Kandinsky-esque, weird as i never looked at this, however this could be influenced from the Bridget Riley exhibition i have been to see at BMAG

Some initial sketches here as well, i think they have started out similar to how my hybrid project ended...perhaps this is a style that suits me?

Each individual image you see will represent one note of the song...might help you picture it a little better. I'm pleased with how they look so far, i think they will be really effective when they are made digital, given some amazing colours. More to come.....

Any feedback would be grand

Thanks :0)

razorfish

I like how this homepage interacts with you - subtle changes in the colours.....i may use something as simple as this in my animation

starting to decode my chosen song....just the bass to go!

interactivity....

I really want my final piece to have an interactive element, i want people to be able to create their own visuals in some way. I have done a lot of research about how to connect lights to speakers to get them to react in time with the music. For all my searching, i have only been able to see how to make one light react independently, when what i really want is for each note to have an individual light reaction. This is something i am finding very hard to work out, it seems this a very complicated thing to achieve, i have downloaded endless software that tells me it does this exact thing, when it doesn't.

Then i stumbled across this.....

I think this is the closest thing i am going to get to what i want (bonus that it comes ready made!) i intend to order 8-10 boards and i want to make each board a different colour LED so people canlisten to the music and figure out which of the colours they feel represent what they are listening to. this is going to make my piece more interesting and people can really get involved in it.

research

I've been looking a lot this week at the relastionships between colours, scientists/peoples own colour codes, how they see sound as colour, researching people who have colour-sound synesthesia and collating what i think are the important pieces of information of all these bits to help me decode my own colour palette. I have relea-rnt how to read music (something i haven't done for about 11 years) and i'm really enjoyin the project so far. There is a lot of scientific language around the assignment of colours to music but im taking it all in and am hoping to be able to symbolise some of it through my final images and animations.
